Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala secures a second term as Director-General of the WTO
Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has been unanimously re-elected for a second four-year term, a decision confirmed by the WTO General Council on Friday. Her new term will commence on September 1, 2025, following the conclusion of her first term on August 31, 2025. This reappointment underscores her significant leadership and strategic vision, which have been pivotal in navigating the complexities of global trade during her initial tenure.
In response to her re-election, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria expressed his congratulations, highlighting that this unanimous decision reflects the international community's trust in Okonjo-Iweala's capabilities to advance multilateral trade and sustainable development. Tinubu emphasized Nigeria's commitment to supporting her efforts in promoting equitable global trade practices and international cooperation. He stated, "Her continued leadership will strengthen the international economic organization’s role as a critical pillar of inclusive global economic growth and good governance".
Other notable figures have also extended their congratulations. Peter Obi, former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, praised Okonjo-Iweala as "one of Nigeria’s most valuable human capital exports" and a source of inspiration for younger generations. Additionally, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori commended her exceptional career, noting that her reappointment is a testament to her expertise in economics and international development.
