The United States delegation staged a dramatic walkout from a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday, leaving the chamber as French diplomats took the floor.
The boycott marked a sharp escalation in transatlantic tensions, triggered by an intense diplomatic feud over the recent reappointment of UN human rights chief Volker Türk.
The friction began after the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to grant Türk a second four-year term. The United States was among only 10 nations that opposed the renewal.
Following the vote, the French UN Mission in Geneva published a post on the social media platform X stating that Washington was no longer a beacon of human rights.
The French post argued that the United States stood isolated alongside nations like North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali, and Russia, adding that the world no longer listened to it.
US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz fired back online over the weekend. He accused Paris of hypocrisy and supporting a leadership that targets democracies while ignoring oppressive regimes.
During Monday's Security Council session focusing on Ukraine, US diplomats physically abandoned their seats as France began to speak.
Alternate US representative Dan Negrea addressed the council immediately after the protest. He condemned what he described as disingenuous grandstanding from Paris.
"This disingenuous grandstanding is tiresome, but we have tolerated it out of a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect as P5 members," Negrea told the council.
"As such, we will not be affording them the benefit of listening to their politicised drivel until they renounce their condescending and disrespectful rhetoric and behave in a manner commensurate with their seat on this Council," Negrea added.
French UN Ambassador Jerome Bonnafont chose not to directly address the walkout during his subsequent remarks. Instead, he focused on broader institutional goals.
"We work to preserve this institution, its independence, its ability to act in service of the Charter and act to serve human rights and peace," Bonnafont stated.
US officials indicated the diplomatic boycott of French statements will persist until Paris changes its tone.
