Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has strongly condemned the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, for his recent comments regarding the party's intentions to take control of Osun and Oyo states. Following the APC's controversial victory in the Ondo State governorship election, Ganduje declared that the party's next target is to achieve political homogeneity in the South-West region. He stated, “Our next target now is the South-West geopolitical zone... We will do all that is possible to bring them into the fold”.
Adeleke responded by labeling Ganduje's remarks as anti-democratic and a direct threat to regional stability. He urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene, suggesting that Ganduje's statements could incite conflict within the South-West. "If Dr. Ganduje truly loves Mr. President, why is he pushing to destabilise the president’s home zone through open threats?" Adeleke questioned, emphasizing that local political dynamics significantly differ from those in Edo and Ondo states.
Adeleke further elaborated on the unique political landscape of Osun, asserting that “voter behaviour is shaped by local grievances and interests, not by external impositions.” He pointed out that Ganduje’s failure to secure support in his home state of Kano exemplifies how local factors dictate electoral outcomes. “If Ganduje failed in his own state... why does he think the people of Osun will allow their will to be disregarded?” he asked rhetorically.
Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State, also criticized Ganduje's ambitions, describing them as wishful thinking. Makinde’s spokesperson echoed this sentiment, stating that both the government and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) would not surrender Oyo to the APC. The Oyo PDP's acting Publicity Secretary highlighted that residents would not abandon their “oasis of peace” for what he termed “devastation” under APC rule.
