Timilehin Doko, the reigning African Scrabble champion, has once again proven his dominance in the game by winning the 5th Janet Adowei Memorial Scrabble Championship held in Lagos on November 18, 2024. In a nail-biting final match, Doko narrowly defeated fellow competitor David Ojih with a score of 480-475, solidifying his status as Nigeria's top player.
Doko's journey through the tournament was marked by resilience and strategy, culminating in a record of 14 wins and 4 losses, with a cumulative score of +1077. Reflecting on his victory, Doko remarked, “Every match was a test of my skills and mental fortitude. I’m grateful for the support from my teammates and family.” His triumph earned him a cash prize of 750,000 naira.
The championship saw intense competition, particularly on the final day. Day One leader Joseph Okere faced an unexpected downturn, suffering five consecutive losses that dashed his hopes of maintaining his lead. “Scrabble is unpredictable; one moment you’re on top, and the next you’re fighting to stay in the game,” Okere commented after his defeat.
As Doko and Ojih faced off in the final round, both players were acutely aware that even a minor mistake could cost them the title. Ojih finished with a commendable cumulative score of +971, earning him a prize of 450,000 naira. Abdulmumin Jimoh secured third place with +658 points and received 350,000 naira.
Engr. Ebikeme Adowei, the tournament host and organizer, praised all participants' dedication to the sport. “This championship is not just about winning; it’s about fostering a community of passionate players,” he stated. The event attracted over 150 competitors from various states, showcasing the growing popularity of Scrabble in Nigeria.
Doko's victory serves as an inspiration for aspiring players across Africa. As he prepares for future competitions, he remains committed to honing his skills and promoting Scrabble as a vital part of Nigeria’s cultural landscape. “I hope my success encourages young players to pursue their passion for Scrabble,” Doko concluded.
