The UK government has announced the availability of 45,000 Seasonal Worker visas for 2025, aimed at addressing labor shortages in the agricultural and poultry sectors. This allocation includes 43,000 visas for horticulture and 2,000 for poultry, providing essential support to meet seasonal demands in food production.
Food Security Minister Daniel Zeichner emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “This government recognises that food security is national security.” The confirmation of these visas allows growers and producers to plan effectively for their workforce needs. The Seasonal Worker visa program, which has been extended until 2029, enables foreign nationals to work temporarily in the UK, specifically in roles such as fruit picking, vegetable harvesting, and poultry processing.
To qualify for a Seasonal Worker visa, applicants must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid sponsorship from a licensed UK employer, and meet specific health and safety standards. Additionally, they must demonstrate sufficient funds for their stay and secure health insurance. Importantly, visa holders are required to leave the UK upon completion of their employment period and cannot switch to other visa types while in the country.
The announcement comes at a critical time as the agricultural sector faces ongoing challenges related to labor availability. Industry representatives, including the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), have called for long-term solutions to ensure a stable workforce. NFU President Tom Bradshaw noted that farming operations require planning well in advance, highlighting the need for greater access to labor.
