Trump to BRICS: Think Twice Before Challenging The Dollar

President-elect Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to the BRICS nations, threatening to impose a 100% tariff on any country that attempts to create a new currency or move away from the U.S. dollar. This ultimatum was conveyed through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, on November 30, 2024. Trump emphasized that the era of allowing BRICS countries—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and newer members like Egypt and the UAE—to distance themselves from the dollar while the U.S. remains passive is "over."

Trump demands that BRICS nations pledge not to establish a new currency or support alternatives to the U.S. dollar. Failure to comply would result in severe economic consequences, including tariffs and restricted access to the U.S. market. Countries that defy this ultimatum could "say goodbye" to selling into the U.S. economy, with Trump stating they might need to "go find another 'sucker'".

This move comes amid ongoing discussions among BRICS nations about reducing their reliance on the U.S. dollar, particularly following Western sanctions against Russia. The bloc has been exploring alternative payment systems and currencies since 2022.

The BRICS alliance has been increasingly vocal about its dissatisfaction with the dominance of the U.S. dollar in global trade, which currently accounts for about 58% of the world's foreign exchange reserves. Trump's threats reflect broader concerns about potential "de-dollarization" efforts by these nations, which could significantly alter global trade dynamics.

This situation marks a critical juncture in international economic relations as Trump prepares to take office again in January 2025, signaling a potentially more aggressive trade policy aimed at safeguarding U.S. economic interests.
