Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the commitment of the Senate to proceed with the controversial tax reform bills, despite opposition and calls for withdrawal from various stakeholders. During a plenary session on Thursday, Akpabio emphasized that the Senate will not be intimidated and is focused on legislative actions that serve the interests of Nigerians.
The Senate had previously passed four tax reform bills for a second reading, which include proposals aimed at overhauling the nation’s tax system. These bills are intended to increase the share of Value Added Tax (VAT) distributed to subnational governments, among other reforms. However, the process has faced criticism and pushback from various groups, including governors and traditional leaders, who have expressed concerns over certain provisions, particularly regarding VAT distribution and derivation principles.
In response to the growing dissent, the Senate on Wednesday had decided to suspend further public hearings on the tax bills to allow for broader consultations with stakeholders. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who presided at the session, noted that this decision aims to address unresolved issues before proceeding with legislative actions.
Akpabio, while refuting media reports that the tax bills have been suspended, mentioned that while the committee reviewing the bills has been reshuffled, the Senate remains dedicated to its legislative responsibilities without succumbing to external pressure.
