On December 13, 2024, Nigeria made a significant financial contribution to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) by paying N85 billion (approximately $54 million) as its community levy. This payment covers 100% of Nigeria's obligations from January 2023 through July 2024, marking the first time in 19 years that the country has fulfilled its entire levy in full.
Dr. Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, announced this achievement during his opening remarks at the 66th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja. He stated, “The good news, and indeed, a very good news, is that for the first time in 19 years, Nigeria has decided to pay 100 percent of its community levy from 2023.” He expressed satisfaction with the payment, emphasizing its significance for regional leadership and commitment: “I am therefore pleased to announce that on Friday, December 13, 2024, Nigeria paid N85bn and $54m, representing 100 percent of the 2023 levy and the levy of 2024 up to July 2024.”
Despite this positive development, Touray highlighted ongoing challenges regarding financial contributions from other member states. He remarked that “a number of countries have fallen behind with their community levy remittances. This needs to be reversed.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who hosted the session as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, reiterated the importance of cooperation among ECOWAS nations in addressing regional issues. The meeting also focused on critical topics such as regional security, economic integration, and political stability in member states facing military rule.
