FG Approves Establishment of Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic in Abuja
The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the establishment of a new federal polytechnic in Gwarinpa, Abuja, and named it after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The institution, now officially called the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal Polytechnic, is part of the government’s efforts to expand access to technical and vocational education across the country. This development aligns with the Federal Government’s policy of ensuring that every state in Nigeria has at least one federal polytechnic to promote equitable access to quality education and foster national development.
The approval was confirmed in a letter dated January 16, 2025, written by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and addressed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. In the letter, Dr. Alausa emphasized that the establishment of the polytechnic is in line with the government’s commitment to advancing technological, vocational, and entrepreneurial education to meet Nigeria's developmental needs. He also requested Wike to identify suitable locations for both a temporary campus and a permanent site for the institution within the FCT.
The naming of the polytechnic after President Tinubu is seen as a recognition of his contributions to national development and his administration’s focus on improving education in Nigeria. The new institution is expected to provide opportunities for young Nigerians to acquire practical skills and knowledge that will enhance their employability and entrepreneurial capabilities.
This move is part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s educational infrastructure and addressing the skills gap in various sectors of the economy.
