John Mahama has been officially sworn in as Ghana's president for a second term on January 7, 2025. The inauguration took place at the Black Star Square in Accra, attended by numerous African leaders and dignitaries, including Nigerian President Bola Tinubu and Kenyan President William Ruto.
Mahama, who previously served from 2012 to 2017, won the recent presidential election on December 9, 2024, securing 56% of the votes against the ruling party's candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 41%. His return to power comes amid significant economic challenges for Ghana, including high unemployment rates and ongoing inflation, which have been exacerbated by a recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout and a sovereign debt crisis.
In his inaugural address, Mahama emphasized the need for a "reset" of the nation to address these pressing issues. He outlined his commitment to tackling corruption, improving energy supply, and fostering job creation through partnerships with the private sector. He stated, "Today should symbolize a chance to rejuvenate our nation," highlighting the critical situation in Ghana's energy sector as a priority. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was also sworn in as Vice President, marking a historic moment as she becomes Ghana's first female vice president.
