Niger State Bans Heavy Trucks on Dikko Road After Fatal Tanker Explosion
A catastrophic fuel tanker explosion at Dikko Junction in Niger State, Nigeria, has resulted in a tragic loss of life, with the death toll now confirmed at 86 and over 55 individuals injured. The incident occurred on January 18, 2025, when a tanker overturned, spilling fuel that ignited as bystanders attempted to collect it. Many of the deceased were burned beyond recognition, prompting a mass burial for the majority of victims.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) reported that 80 victims were interred in a mass grave near the Dikko Primary Healthcare Center, while five others were returned to their families for burial. The burial process was conducted by local authorities and volunteers, who worked through the night to ensure the victims were treated with dignity. Abdullahi Baba-Arah, NSEMA's Director-General, confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify additional victims as families continue to search for their missing loved ones.
Governor Mohammed Umar Bago visited the explosion site and expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He announced new safety measures aimed at preventing future accidents, including a ban on heavy vehicles crossing the Dikko Bridge. Instead, vehicles are required to use an underpass and take appropriate detours. The governor also ordered medical personnel from hospitals in Minna to assist at Suleja General Hospital, where many injured individuals are receiving treatment.
