The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has firmly denied claims of a national grid collapse following a recent blackout, labeling such reports as "inaccurate." Ndidi Mbah, TCN's General Manager of Public Affairs, clarified that the power outage was due to the tripping of the Osogbo-Ihovbor line at approximately 1:41 PM, which was subsequently followed by the Benin-Omotosho line tripping.
In her statement, Mbah emphasized, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, hereby states that the nation's grid did not experience any collapse today, contrary to the widely published misinformation in the media.” She noted that prior to the tripping incidents, total generation on the grid was 4,335.63 megawatts (MW), which significantly dropped to 2,573.23 MW afterward. This drop illustrates that a complete grid failure did not occur.
Mbah explained that the outages primarily impacted power supply to Lagos and affected several plants including Egbin and Olorunsogo. “These consequences only affected bulk supply to the Lagos axis alone,” she added. Restoration efforts are underway, with most systems back online except for the Benin-Omotosho 330kV line.
Furthermore, Mbah urged caution against spreading misinformation and stressed the importance of accurate reporting in the media. She stated, “TCN is working hard to build a more robust transmission grid in spite of ongoing challenges.” This incident highlights the ongoing issues within Nigeria's power infrastructure and the need for clear communication regarding operational status.
