Earlier today, March 12, 2025, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was reportedly denied entry into the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters, where lawmakers were holding a plenary session.
The governor had arrived at the Assembly complex to present the 2025 budget but was met with locked gates and an apparent refusal by lawmakers to grant him access.
Governor Fubara, who was accompanied by key government officials, expressed his frustration over the incident. He accused the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, of deliberately avoiding communication with him.
According to Fubara, several attempts had been made to reach out to the Speaker prior to his arrival at the Assembly complex, but these efforts were ignored. The governor described the situation as unfortunate and emphasized that his visit was strictly in line with his constitutional duty to present the state budget for legislative consideration. He reassured Rivers residents that his actions were motivated by a commitment to serve their best interests.
The incident is believed to be linked to ongoing political tensions between Governor Fubara and some members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who are reportedly loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike.
These tensions have been escalating recently following a Supreme Court ruling that affirmed Martin Amaewhule as Speaker of the House. The court’s decision also included a directive to halt financial disbursements to Rivers State until the Assembly is properly constituted.
