Frustrated residents of Otukpo, Benue State, took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the rampant killings and kidnappings plaguing the area. The protest, which disrupted major roads, was a desperate cry for government and security agencies to address the escalating insecurity.
The protest was sparked by a series of violent incidents, including the recent killing of a local man, Akatu Onche, and the abduction of a woman in the Asa community. Residents expressed their frustration over the recurring attacks, which have forced many to flee their homes.
One protester, Daniel Oche, claimed that electricity is often cut off before attacks, suggesting a possible pattern. “We can no longer sleep with our eyes closed. These attacks happen too often, and nothing is being done to stop them,” he said.
Chanting “We no go gree!”, the protesters demanded urgent intervention from the government. They criticized the lack of security presence in the area, despite repeated appeals for help.
Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District, echoed the protesters’ concerns. In a statement, he condemned the attacks and called for immediate action from security agencies. “The situation in Otukpo is unacceptable. The government must act swiftly to protect the lives and property of our people,” he said.
