Protest Erupts in Benue as Youths Block Abuja-Makurdi Highway Over Killings
Angry youths in Benue State took to the Abuja-Makurdi highway today, blocking the major route in a protest against the recent spate of violent killings in the region. The demonstration, marked by youths dressed in black and carrying placards, disrupted traffic and drew attention to the ongoing insecurity affecting local communities.
The protest was sparked by a deadly attack in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area, where over 200 people were reportedly killed by suspected armed herdsmen. The youths expressed frustration with the perceived lack of effective government response and demanded urgent action to restore peace and security.
The blockade caused significant traffic congestion, highlighting the depth of anger and desperation among the youth. Despite government warnings against unlawful gatherings, the protesters insisted on making their grievances known, calling for justice for the victims and stronger security measures.
Authorities have yet to issue an official response to the protest, but the incident underscores the urgent need for solutions to the violence plaguing Benue State.
