In the wake of the passing of the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Ijebu-Ode Local Government has ordered the temporary closure of the town’s three major markets. The announcement was made on Monday, July 14, by the Chairman of the Local Government Area, Hon. Dare Alebiosu.
The markets affected by the directive include Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje. According to the chairman, the shutdown is a mark of respect for the revered monarch, who died on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 91. Alebiosu emphasized that the closure aligns with traditional customs observed in Ijebuland during periods of mourning for a paramount ruler.
In a statement issued from the council secretariat, Alebiosu noted that the markets would remain closed until further notice. He said that a formal date for the resumption of market activities would be communicated following consultations with traditional authorities and the Awujale’s royal court.
“The closure of the markets is part of our collective mourning as a people,” the statement read. “We urge traders, residents, and all stakeholders to cooperate fully as we honour the memory of our departed royal father.”
The news of the monarch’s passing has sent waves of mourning across the Ijebu kingdom and beyond. Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers and held the title of Awujale of Ijebuland for 64 years. His leadership was marked by extensive modernization efforts and advocacy for traditional institutions in the country.
As the town prepares for royal rites and ceremonies associated with the mourning period, the local government has appealed for calm and cooperation among residents. Security operatives have reportedly been stationed around the affected markets to ensure compliance and maintain order during the temporary closure.
The directive to shut down the markets is part of broader cultural observances that traditionally follow the passing of a king in Yoruba communities. Community leaders have also encouraged citizens to refrain from loud festivities or other public gatherings considered inappropriate during the mourning period.
Oba Sikiru Adetona’s passing was formally confirmed by palace sources late on Sunday and has since been acknowledged by political and traditional figures across the country. The Ogun State Government is expected to release an official programme for his funeral rites in the coming days.
