Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives Commence Two-Month Annual Recess
The Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives have both initiated their annual legislative recess, adjourning plenary sessions for a two-month period with plans to reconvene on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. The announcement was made during plenary sessions held on July 23 and 24, as lawmakers temporarily paused full chamber activities in accordance with the legislative calendar of the 10th National Assembly inaugurated in June this year.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, addressing the Senate on July 24, stressed that while plenary sessions have been suspended, all committee work must continue uninterrupted during the recess. He urged senators to intensify oversight duties, including investigative hearings and thorough inspections of federal projects across the nation. Akpabio specifically encouraged visits to correctional facilities and urged committees to finalize reports to be presented once the Senate reconvenes. He highlighted that the recess presents an opportunity for senators to assess the implementation of both the current 2024 budget and the new 2025 budget, noting that the country is presently operating under these overlapping fiscal frameworks with the 2024 capital budget having been extended through the end of the year.
Similarly, the House of Representatives commenced its recess on July 23 following the unanimous adoption of a motion to adjourn. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen encouraged members to utilize the recess productively by engaging in constituency outreach, addressing pressing local concerns, and monitoring ongoing federal projects within their districts. He emphasized that the recess should not be viewed as a vacation but as a vital period to strengthen connections with constituents and ensure effective representation. Prior to recess, the House actively handled various legislative activities, including approving significant funding for infrastructure projects and paying tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Both chambers’ recess coincides with a period of substantial national challenges, including ongoing economic and security issues, underscoring the importance of the continued oversight functions that lawmakers must maintain during their time away from plenary sittings. The synchronized schedule for the Senate and House resumption on September 23 ensures coordinated legislative activity moving forward.
This scheduled break is a routine feature of Nigeria’s legislative calendar, designed to provide lawmakers the opportunity to balance their national legislative duties with constituency responsibilities and personal commitments, while also fostering thorough review and oversight of governmental projects and activities during the interval.
