President Tinubu Declares National Mourning Following Buhari’s Passing
Former President Muhammadu Buhari, who led Nigeria both as a military ruler and later as a civilian president, died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a clinic in London after a prolonged illness. He was 82 years old. The news was confirmed by his family spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, who announced Buhari’s passing in an official statement, praying for his acceptance in Aljannatul Firdaus.
Buhari’s death marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political history. Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, he was a prominent figure who ruled Nigeria twice: first as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His 2015 election was notable as he became the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat an incumbent president, unseating Goodluck Jonathan in what was widely regarded as a credible election.
During his military rule, Buhari came to power through a coup and was known for his strict governance style. After Nigeria’s return to democracy, he ran unsuccessfully for president several times before finally winning in 2015. His civilian presidency was marked by a strong anti-corruption stance and efforts to stabilize the economy. However, his administration also faced significant challenges, including escalating insecurity, widespread violence, and criticism over the handling of the economy and corruption.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Buhari’s successor, expressed deep condolences to the family and ordered national flags to be flown at half-mast for seven days as a mark of respect. Tinubu also directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to bring Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria. A full state funeral is expected, with burial arrangements to follow Islamic rites in Buhari’s hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
Buhari’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders and citizens alike, reflecting on his complex legacy as a leader who shaped Nigeria’s modern political landscape through both military and civilian rule.
His passing comes two years after he left office, closing a long and eventful public service career that spanned decades and left an indelible mark on Africa’s most populous nation.
