On July 28, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted a grand reception at the State House in Abuja to celebrate the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s national football team, for their triumphant victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The team’s remarkable 3-2 win against Morocco in Rabat marked their 10th WAFCON title, solidifying their dominance in African women’s football. The ceremony, attended by top government officials, sports administrators, and enthusiastic supporters, was a testament to the nation’s pride in the team’s achievement.

The Super Falcons’ journey to the title was nothing short of dramatic. Trailing 2-0 at halftime in the final against the host nation, Morocco, the team staged a stunning comeback in the second half, scoring three goals to clinch the trophy. This victory, their first WAFCON title since 2018, underscored their resilience and skill, qualities that President Tinubu lauded during the event. The President conferred the prestigious national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players and the 11-member technical crew, recognizing their contribution to elevating Nigeria’s standing in international sports.

In a gesture of appreciation, President Tinubu announced substantial rewards for the team. Each player was awarded a three-bedroom apartment in the Renewed Hope Estate, a flagship housing project of the administration, along with a cash prize equivalent to $100,000. The technical crew members, including coaches and support staff, each received $50,000. These rewards were met with applause from the audience, reflecting the government’s commitment to celebrating excellence in sports. Additionally, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, led by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, contributed N10 million to each player and technical crew member, further amplifying the financial recognition for their efforts.

The ceremony was marked by moments of national pride, with the Super Falcons presenting the gleaming WAFCON trophy to President Tinubu. The President, in his address, highlighted the team’s victory as a symbol of hope and unity for Nigerians. He praised their determination in overcoming a challenging deficit in the final, noting that their success inspires young girls and women across the country to pursue their dreams in sports and beyond. The event also featured cultural performances and a display of the team’s journey through a video montage, which captivated attendees and underscored the significance of the achievement.

The Super Falcons’ latest triumph adds to their storied legacy as Africa’s most successful women’s football team. Their 10th WAFCON title reinforces Nigeria’s dominance in the competition, having won more titles than any other nation. The victory in Morocco was particularly significant, as it came against a formidable host team backed by passionate home support. The team’s ability to turn the tide in the second half showcased their tactical discipline and mental fortitude, qualities that have defined their success over the years.

As the reception concluded, the players expressed gratitude for the support they received from Nigerians and the government. The Super Falcons’ victory and the subsequent honors bestowed upon them mark a historic chapter in Nigeria’s sporting history, one that will inspire generations to come.
