Finance Minister Wale Edun Recovering Well, Presidency Clarifies
Amid widespread speculation and contradictory reports concerning the health of Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, official sources from the presidency have provided reassuring updates confirming he is recuperating well. This comes after rumours circulated claiming that Edun had suffered a stroke and was flown abroad for urgent medical treatment, which the presidency firmly denied.
Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, personally spoke with Edun on Monday, October 13, 2025. In a social media post, Dare described a brief, reassuring conversation with the minister in Abuja, humorously mentioning they shared a bowl of Amala during their chat. Edun conveyed that his health is improving, and he remains hopeful for a full recovery. The minister is resting at his residence in Abuja, receiving medical care and continuing to oversee President Tinubu’s economic reform agenda in a limited capacity.
Presidential officials have explicitly dismissed the reports by some media outlets and sources, including claims that Edun suffered severe paralysis from a stroke or was flown abroad for treatment. A senior government source, speaking anonymously, emphasised that while Edun is indisposed due to illness, the condition is not a stroke, and there is currently no plan to replace him. The source noted that Edun’s ailment is somewhat serious but manageable, and he is under close medical supervision within Nigeria.
This clarification starkly contrasts earlier reports that suggested a dire prognosis and even discussed the president’s confidential efforts to find a replacement for Edun amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic challenges. The conflicting accounts created some public concern, especially considering Edun’s central role in steering Nigeria’s fiscal policy amidst complex issues such as inflation control, foreign exchange stability, and budgetary reforms.
In light of Edun’s absence at significant international financial meetings, the Central Bank Governor, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has been designated to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2025 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C.
As Nigerians and global observers await Mr. Edun’s full recovery, the presidency continues to assure that the minister’s health is steadily improving. Meanwhile, the government has reaffirmed its focus on economic stability and reforms, with key officials working to preserve continuity in policy implementation during this period.
