Pandemonium in Oyo Community as Youths Block Alaafin from Leaving World Twins Festival Venue

There was a dramatic and tense incident in Igbo-Ora, located in the Ibarapa area of Oyo State, during the recent World Twins Festival as a group of youths blocked the convoy of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, attempting to prevent him from leaving the festival venue. The incident caused widespread panic and disrupted the smooth running of the cultural event meant to celebrate twin births, which is a significant occasion in the community.

The youths, described by eyewitnesses as aggressive and determined, obstructed the convoy, demanding money in what appeared to be an act of coercion or protest. In response, security forces accompanying the Alaafin resorted to firing tear gas to disperse the crowd. Reports further indicate that gunshots were fired amidst the chaos, heightening fears and tension among other festival attendees and residents. The intervention by security was aimed at ensuring the safety of the Alaafin and clearing a passage for his convoy to leave the venue.

Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, who is revered as the traditional ruler and spiritual head of the Oyo people, was attending the vibrant festival which draws cultural enthusiasts and twins from around the world to Igbo-Ora, famously known as the "Twin Capital of the World." The festival celebrates the uniqueness of twins and twin births, symbolising harmony and prosperity in the community.

Following the incident, the palace of the Alaafin issued a statement clarifying the events and condemning the disruption caused by the unruly youths. They emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and unity during such cultural celebrations and assured the public of Alaafin’s safety. Authorities are reportedly working to identify the perpetrators responsible for blocking the convoy and provoking the unrest.
