German Chancellor Merz Rules Out Putin's Successful Exit from Ukraine War
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated firmly that Russian President Vladimir Putin has no successful way to exit the ongoing war in Ukraine. Speaking in the Bundestag, Merz emphasised that any resolution must be agreed upon by Ukraine and European countries, rejecting deals imposed solely by great powers.
"We want this war to end as quickly as possible," he said, but added that "an agreement negotiated without the consent of Ukraine and Europeans will not be the basis for genuine, sustainable peace."
Merz highlighted Ukraine’s sovereignty and insisted that the country is not a pawn in international negotiations. His remarks align with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's readiness to discuss a U.S.-backed peace framework that includes European allies.
The chancellor underscored that European decisions must come from mutual consent, reinforcing Berlin’s diplomatic stance and support for Ukraine’s autonomy.
In concrete terms, Germany plans to increase its financial aid for Ukraine to €11.5 billion in 2026, up from the previously planned €8.5 billion.
Merz also confirmed Germany’s intention to use frozen Russian assets to support the Ukrainian people, deepening a long-term commitment to sustain Ukraine’s defence and recovery efforts.
