Israel has dismissed three senior military generals “bearing personal responsibility” for systemic failures that contributed to the devastating Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, in a decisive move by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) aimed at restoring accountability and public trust.
The dismissals were announced on November 23, 2025, by Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, Israel’s Chief of the General Staff. The three generals dismissed served as key commanders responsible for intelligence, operational strategy, and overseeing the southern command, the region bordering Gaza where the attack unfolded.
Zamir described the attack as a “serious, resounding, systemic failure.” The decision to remove these officers came after a comprehensive investigation into the operational shortcomings that preceded the October attack.
This development is part of a broader disciplinary wave targeting numerous senior officers across different branches of the IDF. Several other commanders received reprimands, while some were relieved entirely from reserve duties.
The IDF maintained that these moves are essential to hold its leadership accountable and prevent a repeat of the catastrophic events that significantly shook Israel’s military credibility.
The October 7 assault by Hamas militants was unprecedented in scale and brutality, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and the taking of dozens of hostages. It has also sparked a two-year conflict resulting in nearly 70,000 deaths in Gaza, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and regional instability.
The IDF’s failure to foresee and prevent the attack, despite existing intelligence apparatuses, has been a source of intense domestic scrutiny and international attention.
