Dorgu Stunner Lifts United Over Newcastle as Amorim’s Tactical Shift Pays Off
A spectacular first-half volley from Patrick Dorgu secured a gritty 1-0 victory for Manchester United over Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Friday. The win, coming in the Premier League's only Boxing Day fixture, propelled Ruben Amorim’s side into fifth place and broke a long-standing psychological hurdle.
The decisive moment arrived in the 24th minute when Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade attempted to head clear a long throw-in from Diogo Dalot. The ball looped to the edge of the area where the 21-year-old Dorgu met it with a perfectly timed left-footed volley that flashed past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale into the bottom corner.
The Denmark international was the standout performer in a match where United had to survive without their talismanic captain, Bruno Fernandes, who was sidelined with an injury.
In a surprise tactical move, Amorim abandoned his signature back-three system for a traditional back four. With Lisandro Martinez captaining the side in his first start of the season, United looked more compact early on, neutralising a Newcastle side that has struggled away from home this campaign.
The second half told a different story as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle dominated nearly two-thirds of the possession. The Magpies unleashed 13 shots in the second period alone, but a combination of poor finishing and disciplined defending kept them at bay. Lewis Hall came closest to an equaliser when his curling long-range effort rattled the crossbar in the 62nd minute.
Despite the heavy pressure, United’s makeshift defence held firm. Young centre-back Ayden Heaven, 20, impressed alongside Martinez, while goalkeeper Senne Lammens provided security with several high-pressure claims in the closing minutes.
The defeat leaves Newcastle in 11th place, continuing a disappointing December run that has seen them win just once in five league matches. While they edged the expected goals (xG) battle, their inability to test Lammens consistently proved fatal.
For Manchester United, the victory marks their 22nd Boxing Day win—a Premier League record—and moves them level on points with fourth-place Chelsea. It also represents their first league win without Fernandes since early 2022.
United now look ahead to a favourable run of fixtures against Wolves, Leeds, and Burnley, while Newcastle must find a solution to their "away day" blues as they fall further behind the European places.
