2027: Peter Obi Formally Defects from LP to ADC

In a seismic shift reshaping Nigeria's political landscape, Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on December 31, 2025, positioning himself at the forefront of a burgeoning opposition alliance aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 polls.

The announcement came during a high-profile rally at Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, where Obi was flanked by prominent South-East leaders and national figures, signalling a strategic realignment to consolidate opposition forces against what he described as entrenched governance failures.

Obi, a former Anambra State governor, framed his move as the dawn of a "rescue journey" for Nigeria, emphasising the need to address poverty, insecurity, corruption, and democratic erosion under the APC-led administration.

"We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a journey of rescue of our country," Obi declared in his speech, urging his supporters in the Obidient Movement to follow him to the ADC. He stressed that Nigeria is not inherently poor but has been "looted into poverty" by a system that rewards mediocrity and impunity.

The event drew a constellation of influential personalities, including former governors Okwesilieze Nwodo of Enugu, Achike Udenwa and Sam Egwu of Ebonyi, and Emeka Ihedioha of Imo. Senators such as Enyinnaya Abaribe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji were also present, alongside ADC National Chairman and former Senate President David Mark, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and former Edo Governor Oserheimen Osunbor.

Obi called for a broad coalition under the ADC, guided by patriotism, to transition Nigeria from consumption to production through agriculture and manufacturing. "A New Nigeria is POssible," he affirmed, vowing to resist election rigging in 2027 by all lawful means.
