The Nigerian Presidency has moved to quell a growing digital firestorm after an official photograph of President Bola Tinubu and Rwandan President Paul Kagame meeting in Paris was flagged by social media users for containing an artificial intelligence watermark. The image, which features the distinctive logo of Elon Musk’s Grok AI tool, triggered intense debate over the authenticity of the high-level diplomatic engagement.
The controversy began late Sunday, January 4, 2026, when President Tinubu’s official X account shared a photo of the two leaders seated at a private lunch. Eagle-eyed netizens quickly spotted a "Grok" watermark in the bottom corner of the frame, leading to accusations that the Presidency was using generative AI to fabricate the President's activities while on his annual end-of-year break in Europe.
Presidential aides were quick to clarify that while AI was involved in the photo's production, the meeting itself was entirely genuine. They explained that because the President is currently on a private vacation, he was not accompanied by his official photography unit. The original image was reportedly captured on a mobile phone and suffered from poor lighting and low resolution.
"This afternoon, I had a private lunch with H. E. President Paul Kagame of Rwanda to discuss the current state of world affairs and advancing Africa in an ever-changing global landscape," the President stated in the original post that sparked the scrutiny.
Defending the use of the software, Special Assistant on New Media, Dada Olusegun, who also shared the image, indicated that the AI tool was used solely for upscaling and enhancing the quality of a real photograph.
The administration argued that the watermark appeared as a standard byproduct of the Grok enhancement feature and was not an admission that the scene was "hallucinated" by a computer.
President Tinubu departed Nigeria for Europe on December 28, 2025. Following his stay in France, he is expected to travel to the United Arab Emirates to attend the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit. As the debate continues, the Presidency maintains that the substance of the meeting—strengthening ties between Nigeria and Rwanda—remains the most important takeaway, regardless of the pixels used to transmit it.
