Team Nigeria Secures Aberdeen Training Base for 2026 Glasgow Games

The National Sports Commission has finalised plans to station Team Nigeria in a four-week intensive residential training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. This strategic move aims to provide athletes with early acclimatisation and technical stability before the global competition begins in nearby Glasgow on July 23, 2026.

Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, confirmed the selection of the Aberdeen training base in a statement released Sunday. The decision marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s approach to international tournaments, prioritising early arrival to eliminate the travel fatigue and logistical hurdles that have frequently hindered the country’s performances in the past.

“We have deliberately positioned our preparation camp close to the competition environment to allow athletes to settle early and train under similar conditions,” Olopade stated. He noted that the Commission chose Aberdeen after his recent site visit to Scotland, which focused on securing athlete-friendly accommodation and world-class training facilities to ensure a seamless transition into competition mode.

The four-week window is designed to foster team bonding and allow technical refinement under the specific weather conditions of the Scottish summer. Olopade emphasised that the Commission is acting on "lessons learned" from previous international outings, specifically citing past experiences where last-minute movements across different time zones proved disruptive to the athletes' physical readiness.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will feature a streamlined ten-sport programme, including athletics, swimming, boxing, and weightlifting. By narrowing the focus and establishing a base in Scotland early, the Commission hopes to maximise the podium potential of Nigeria’s elite athletes. The preparation framework follows formal recommendations from the Elite Podium Board, a body tasked with ensuring Nigerian sports adhere to international best practices.

“Our goal is to remove avoidable stress from the athletes and technical crew,” Olopade added. He explained that by planning well in advance, the NSC aims to provide a stable environment where athletes can reach their peak performance exactly when it matters most.

The Glasgow 2026 Games are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 2, 2026. Team Nigeria is expected to arrive in Aberdeen in late June, allowing for the full month of preparation promised by the Commission.
