Tinubu and Erdoğan Seal $5 Billion Trade Target and Defence Pact

 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have committed to a transformative strategic partnership, setting a bold $5 billion bilateral trade target and signing nine major agreements to deepen cooperation in defence, energy, and education.

 The agreements were finalised Tuesday during President Tinubu’s first official state visit to the Republic of Türkiye. The visit, which began with a high-level military reception at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, marks a recalibration of relations between Africa’s largest economy and the Mediterranean power.

 Central to the diplomatic breakthrough is the establishment of a Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO). President Erdoğan confirmed that the committee would serve as the primary engine to more than double the current trade volume, which currently fluctuates around $2 billion.

 "Today, we conducted a comprehensive review of our relations in the fields of trade, investments, energy, education, and the defence industry," President Erdoğan stated during a joint press briefing. "We see that we have significant potential... our commitment is to the target of a $5 billion trade volume."

 Nigeria currently exports primarily crude oil and agricultural products to Türkiye, while importing machinery, steel, and aviation technology. The new MoUs aim to diversify this exchange, specifically through "quick wins" in defence and halal quality infrastructure.

 President Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria is "open for serious partnership" and seeking "investment that creates value and shared prosperity." He specifically lauded Türkiye’s advanced defence capabilities, signalling a move to adopt Turkish military training and expertise to bolster Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts in the Sahel region.

 "We also spoke frankly about security," Tinubu remarked, noting that the partnership would involve deeper intelligence sharing to "neutralise agents of destabilisation".

 The nine signed instruments cover a broad spectrum of governance, including:

• Defence Cooperation: A protocol on military training and hardware collaboration.
• Economic Governance: The establishment of JETCO and a halal quality infrastructure framework.
• Social & Academic Ties: MoUs on diaspora policy, higher education, and cooperation between the two nations' diplomatic academies.

 Accompanying the President is a high-powered delegation including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar; and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

 While the Presidency has described the visit as "consequential" for national security and economic reform, the official statement noted the President would return to Abuja "at the conclusion of the visit," without specifying a final date.
