Galatasaray S.K. narrowly advanced to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on Wednesday night, surviving a ferocious comeback attempt by 10-man Juventus to progress 7–5 on aggregate despite a 3–2 second-leg defeat at the Allianz Stadium.
Holding a commanding 5–2 lead from the first leg in Istanbul, the Turkish champions saw their advantage evaporate as the Italian giants levelled the tie at 5–5 in regulation time. Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli opened the scoring with a 37th-minute penalty before a controversial straight red card was issued to defender Lloyd Kelly in the 49th minute for a challenge on Barış Alper Yılmaz.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Federico Gatti tapped home in the 70th minute, and Weston McKennie headed in a third in the 82nd minute to force extra time. The momentum finally shifted back to the visitors in the 105th minute when Victor Osimhen clinically finished through the legs of Mattia Perin. Yılmaz then sealed the aggregate victory with a 119th-minute strike on the counterattack.
Osimhen, who was named UEFA Player of the Match, notably refused to celebrate his crucial goal against the "Old Lady." His restraint fuelled ongoing speculation regarding a future move to Turin, especially following his pre-match comments stating that "90% of players in the world would want to play for Juventus."
"Some games aren't just played but composed," Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti said during his post-match analysis. He praised his side's resilience but noted that "hard times don't take away your value; they force you to show it."
Galatasaray's progression marks their first appearance in the tournament's final 16 since 2014. They join a knockout field that includes heavyweights such as Real Madrid and Manchester City. The draw for the Round of 16 is scheduled for Friday, February 27, in Nyon, Switzerland.
