Tinubu Appoints Tunji Disu as Acting IGP Following Egbetokun’s Resignation
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect. The decision follows the sudden resignation of Mr Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down Tuesday, citing "pressing family considerations".
The leadership change, announced in a State House press release by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s internal security hierarchy. Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was originally scheduled to serve until 2027 following a tenure extension granted in 2025.
President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service, particularly his commitment to strengthening the nation's security architecture. While official statements cited personal reasons for the exit, some reports from The Cable and Premium Times suggested the resignation followed a directive from the President during a late-night meeting on Monday.
The President expressed full confidence in AIG Disu’s ability to lead the Force during this transition. He noted that Disu’s "experience, operational depth, and demonstrated leadership capacity" are essential to addressing the current security challenges confronting the country.
AIG Disu is a highly decorated officer known for his modernisation of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and his successful tenure as the Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos. Before this appointment, he served as the AIG in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.
In accordance with the Police Act 2020, the Presidency confirmed that the Nigeria Police Council will be convened shortly. This meeting is a constitutional requirement to formally consider Disu’s appointment as the substantive Inspector-General of Police before his name is transmitted to the Senate for final confirmation.
The administration reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to maintain national security.
