Atiku’s Son Quits Adamawa Cabinet After Governor’s APC Defection

Alhaji Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the eldest son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, resigned his appointment as the Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development on Monday. The high-profile exit comes just three days after Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a formal resignation letter dated March 2, 2026, Abubakar stated that his decision to step down followed "deep personal reflection and careful consideration". While the letter maintained a professional tone, the timing highlights a sharp political divide in the state, as Abubakar opted not to follow the Governor and 22 other cabinet colleagues into the APC.

"I remain profoundly grateful for the confidence and trust Your Excellency reposed in me throughout my tenure," Abubakar wrote in the letter addressed to the Governor through the Secretary to the State Government. According to reports from Channels Television, he further noted that the Governor’s support provided the "enabling environment to carry out the responsibilities of the office with dedication."

The political earthquake began last Friday when Governor Fintiri announced his defection in a statewide broadcast, claiming the move was a strategic necessity for the state's development. While 22 commissioners and 39 special advisers publicly declared their loyalty to the Governor’s new party within 24 hours, Abubakar was a notable absentee from the group.

Despite the resignation, Abubakar’s team insists this is not an exit from public life. The statement clarified that the move marks the "beginning of new avenues for developmental collaboration" and reaffirmed his commitment to the growth and unity of Adamawa State.
