The political landscape of Kano State experienced a dramatic shift this weekend as Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo officially resigned from both his position as Deputy Governor and his membership in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP). His departure marks a significant turning point for the state’s executive branch and the party that swept into power in the 2023 elections.

In a formal letter addressed to the NNPP leadership on March 29, 2026, Gwarzo confirmed his exit from the party following his resignation from the state government just 48 hours earlier. The decision comes at a time of intense political realignment within the state, as the relationship between key government figures and the party hierarchy has reportedly come under strain.

Gwarzo stated that his decision was reached after deep reflection and extensive consultations with his political associates. He noted that the evolving political environment necessitated a review of his affiliations to ensure they remain aligned with his commitment to good governance. "It has become necessary to review my membership of the party to better align with my vision for the future of our state and the welfare of our people," Gwarzo said in his official statement.

The resignation follows a period of heightened tension in the Kano State House of Assembly. Reports indicate that the legislature had initiated impeachment proceedings against Gwarzo shortly before he stepped down. While the Deputy Governor maintained that his exit was a personal choice, political analysts suggest the move was a strategic maneuver to avoid a forced removal from office amidst a deepening rift within the state's leadership.

Despite his departure from the NNPP, Gwarzo expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership for the opportunity to serve. He emphasised that his immediate focus would be on the Kwankwasiyya movement, the influential political group led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. He described his next priority as "strengthening the Kwankwasiyya movement" in preparation for the 2027 general elections, signalling that while he has left the party, he remains a central figure in Kano’s political future.
