UAE Air Defences Intercept Massive Iranian Missile and Drone Barrage

The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defence announced Tuesday that its air defence systems successfully intercepted the vast majority of a massive wave of ballistic missiles and drones launched from Iran. The assault, which targeted various locations across the emirates, represents a significant escalation in a rapidly widening Middle Eastern conflict that has already claimed the lives of top Iranian leadership.

In an official statement released March 3, 2026, Emirati military officials confirmed that their units detected 137 ballistic missiles, successfully neutralising 132 of them before they could reach their targets. The Ministry further disclosed that of the 209 drones launched during the operation, 195 were intercepted by the UAE Air Force. While 14 drones and five missiles managed to bypass the primary defence shield, they reportedly landed in open waters or uninhabited areas, causing only minor material damage to civilian facilities.

The UAE government has issued a stern condemnation of the strike, characterising the event as a direct violation of national sovereignty and international law. "The authorities remain on high alert and are fully prepared to address any threats," the Ministry of Defence stated. "We are committed to taking all necessary measures to safeguard our country and ensure the protection of all who live in and visit the United Arab Emirates."

This latest flare-up follows a devastating US-Israeli air campaign launched last Saturday, which resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran has vowed a "crushing revenge" against any nation hosting American military assets or cooperating with Israeli operations. H.E. Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasised that the UAE remains focused on regional stability while maintaining a posture of total readiness.

The volatility of the current landscape was further underscored by a parallel strike on the United States Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. According to Saudi officials, two Iranian drones struck the embassy compound early Tuesday morning, triggering a fire in the diplomatic quarter.
