The Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on the Federal and State Governments to take immediate, decisive action to alleviate the severe economic hardship and persistent insecurity currently plaguing the region.
In an Easter message issued on April 4, 2026, titled "Be Hopeful, Be Resilient, Be Compassionate," the state Chairman of CAN, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, expressed deep concern over the socio-economic conditions in the state. He noted that the ongoing security crisis has led to a significant loss of lives, the displacement of numerous communities, and the total disruption of essential farming activities.
"We urge the Federal and State Governments to do all within their powers to alleviate the sufferings of the people and bring an end to the insecurity that has ravaged our land," Yohanna stated. The cleric, who also serves as the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, emphasised that the government must prioritise the safety and well-being of its citizens above all else.
While addressing the spiritual significance of the season, Yohanna encouraged the Christian faithful to remain steadfast in prayer for the peace and development of Niger State. He specifically requested prayers for Governor Umaru Bago, asking for divine wisdom to help the administration successfully execute its "New Niger Agenda."
The Chairman further urged residents to embody the spirit of the season by extending support to the vulnerable, particularly widows and orphans. He reminded the community that Easter symbolises hope and the triumph of life over death, which should inspire collective resilience during these trying times.
Looking toward the future, the CAN Chairman also touched upon civic responsibility, urging Christians to participate actively in the democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections. He concluded by commending security agencies for their ongoing efforts to curb banditry and called for a more inclusive approach to governance to ensure no group is left behind.
