Paris Saint-Germain secured their place in a second consecutive UEFA Champions League final on Wednesday night, holding Bayern Munich to a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena to progress 6-5 on aggregate. The French giants, who are the reigning European champions, relied on an early strike and a disciplined defensive performance to weather a late surge from the German hosts.
The visitors took command of the tie within three minutes of the opening whistle. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia exploited space on the left flank before delivering a precise cut-back to Ousmane Dembélé, who clinical finish silenced the Munich crowd. This early breakthrough extended PSG’s aggregate cushion to two goals, forcing Bayern to chase the game for the remainder of the evening.
Bayern Munich dominated possession throughout the match but struggled to dismantle a resilient PSG backline anchored by goalkeeper Matvei Safonov. Despite recording numerous attempts from Michael Olise and Luis DÃaz, the hosts could not find a way through until deep into stoppage time. Harry Kane eventually levelled the score on the night in the 94th minute, turning in a cross from Alphonso Davies, but it proved to be the final action of the match.
"I think it was a match between two incredibly talented teams," PSG manager Luis Enrique stated following the high-stakes encounter. Reflecting on the intense nature of the two-legged semi-final, he added that his side showed "the type of football we love," acknowledging the difficulty of containing a team of Bayern’s caliber.
The result ends the European campaign for Vincent Kompany’s side, who entered the second leg trailing 5-4. Before the match, Kompany had emphasised the need for a complete performance, noting that "you have to score one more goal than your opponent to win." While they managed to avoid defeat in the second leg, the narrow aggregate deficit from the first leg in Paris proved insurmountable.
Paris Saint-Germain will now defend their title against Arsenal in the final at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest on May 30. This marks PSG’s third appearance in a Champions League final in seven years and sets up a heavyweight clash with the English side, who are seeking their first European Cup.
