Morocco secured a dramatic berth in the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Round of 16 after defeating the Netherlands 3–2 in a tense penalty shootout. The gripping Round of 32 encounter at Monterrey Stadium ended 1–1 through extra time before Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou emerged as the shootout hero.
The Atlas Lions will now advance to face tournament co-hosts Canada in Houston on Saturday, July 4. The defeat ends a heartbreaking campaign for the Dutch, who were widely considered dark horses to lift the trophy.
The match exploded into life in the 72nd minute when Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock for the Oranje. Gakpo, playing just days after announcing the tragic loss of his unborn son, was overcome with emotion and wept openly during a prolonged team embrace. The strike marked his sixth career World Cup goal, tying him with Dutch legends like Arjen Robben and Dennis Bergkamp.
Just as Ronald Koeman’s side appeared to have sealed progression, Morocco struck back deep into stoppage time. In the 91st minute, substitute Issa Diop rose highest to meet Chemsdine Talbi's looping cross, directing a brilliant header past Dutch goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to force extra time.
An intensely physical extra 30 minutes yielded no further goals, courtesy of fine reflex saves from both Verbruggen and Bounou. In the ensuing shootout, both sides missed twice before Bounou made a decisive diving save to deny Crysencio Summerville. Midfielder Ismael Saibari then stepped up to blast home the winning spot-kick, sending the Moroccan contingent into absolute raptures.
"We never stopped believing," Morocco match-winner Issa Diop stated in a post-match broadcast interview, as reported by FIFA media. "This team has the soul of our 2022 run, and we are ready to make Africa proud once again in the next round".
