Ecuador produced a stunning fightback to defeat Germany 2-1 on Thursday, securing a place in the 2026 World Cup round of 32 as one of the top third-placed teams.
Gonzalo Plata scored the winning goal in the 77th minute at MetLife Stadium, sparking wild celebrations among Ecuadorian fans who dominated the atmosphere in the 80,000-plus crowd. The victory marks Ecuador's first knockout-stage appearance in 20 years and their first win over a European side since 2013.
Germany took the lead in just the second minute through Leroy Sané. However, Ecuador responded swiftly. Nilson Angulo equalised in the ninth minute with a powerful strike from outside the box after capitalising on a German turnover.
The match remained tense until Plata pounced on a clever flick from substitute Kevin RodrÃguez to poke the ball past veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. Ecuador held firm to claim the historic three points.
Ecuador coach Sebastián Beccacece, whose position had been under pressure, celebrated by leaping into the stands to embrace family members. "It’s not about what it means to me; this is for the people. The players have given them this qualification. Let them celebrate and enjoy it," Beccacece said.
He added in post-match comments: "I invite everyone to keep united. That’s what we did today."
Germany, already assured of topping Group E, rested several key players but still fielded a strong side including Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz. Coach Julian Nagelsmann acknowledged the defeat: "Congratulations to Ecuador... We started well, but then we gave the ball away too cheaply."
The result sees Germany and Ivory Coast advance as the top two from Group E, with Ecuador joining as a best third-placed team.
