Forward Thapelo Maseko scored a historic second-half goal to lift South Africa to a stunning 1–0 victory over South Korea on Wednesday at Monterrey Stadium, securing the nation’s first-ever berth in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds.
The monumental win allowed Bafana Bafana to finish second in Group A with four points, trailing group leaders Mexico. This milestone ends decades of tournament frustration for South Africa, who previously failed to survive the group stage during their 1998, 2002, and 2010 campaigns.
The game’s defining moment arrived in the 63rd minute when 22-year-old Maseko collected a precise cross from substitute Tshepang Moremi. The young attacker cut inside onto his left foot and fired a low, piercing drive through a defender's legs into the bottom corner of the net.
South Korea controlled 68 percent of possession but lacked a clinical edge in the final third. They nearly opened the scoring in the second minute when a powerful header from Kim Min-jae was cleared off the goal line by South African defender Aubrey Modiba.
In a tactical gamble, South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo benched superstar captain Son Heung-min for the first half, ending Son's streak of 12 consecutive World Cup starts. Though Son entered at halftime, the Asian powerhouse struggled to break down a resilient South African defence.
South Africa head coach Hugo Broos praised the collective tactical discipline and immense character displayed by his squad following their opening-match struggles.
"It's historical, and I'm very happy for the guys," Broos told reporters. "Tactically we were very good and it was difficult for South Korea to find space. We scored, then there were 20 minutes of heart-stopping moments."
South Africa will now travel to Los Angeles to face tournament co-hosts Canada in the Round of 32 on Sunday, June 28. Meanwhile, South Korea must endure a tense wait to see if their three points will be enough to progress as one of the best third-placed teams.
