An early morning inferno has ravaged sections of the historic Bode Market in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying merchandise and property valued at millions of naira. The fire outbreak, which erupted before dawn on Friday, July 3, 2026, tore through numerous lock-up shops and left dozens of local merchants completely displaced.
The Oyo State Fire Service Agency mobilised emergency personnel to the commercial hub, successfully containing the blaze before it could spread further. Officials reported that responders faced severe difficulties navigating the zone due to the market's highly congested layout and closely packed structures, which temporarily slowed down early firefighting operations.
Although authorities confirmed that no casualties or injuries occurred during the incident, the financial impact on the community is profound. Bode Market is widely recognised as one of the largest trading facilities in Ibadan, acting as a primary regional hub for traditional herbs, roots, animal skins, and indigenous products.
Distraught market men and women were seen weeping and searching through the smoking ruins to salvage whatever remained of their inventory. "Everything is gone. I don't know where to start from again, my investment is gone; government should please support us," an affected trader lamented while assessing the charred remnants of their storefront.
A formal post-fire investigation has commenced by state safety inspectors to determine the exact cause and point of origin of the outbreak. In the wake of the tragedy, emergency management officials have renewed their calls for stricter fire safety compliance and improved space management within major public markets.
Political figures and stakeholders have initiated immediate relief efforts to ease the burden on the victims.
