In this verse from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus speaks to people who worried about their daily needs—food, clothing, and the uncertainties of life. His words are not a call to ignore responsibility but an invitation to reorder our priorities. “Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness” means placing God at the centre of our lives, trusting that His will, His ways, and His presence are of greater value than anything else we pursue. When God becomes our first priority, everything else finds its proper place.
Jesus also gives a wonderful promise: “all these things will be given to you as well.” This does not mean life will always be easy or that we will receive everything we desire. Rather, it assures us that our Heavenly Father knows our needs and faithfully provides what is best for us. Instead of being consumed by worry, we are invited to live with confidence in God's loving care. As we seek Him first, our hearts become anchored in His peace, our decisions are guided by His wisdom, and our lives reflect the values of His kingdom.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to seek Your kingdom above everything else. Keep my heart from being distracted by worry, fear, or the pursuit of temporary things. Teach me to trust that You know my needs and that You will faithfully provide according to Your perfect will. Shape my thoughts, my priorities, and my actions so that they bring honour to You. May Your righteousness guide my life each day, and may I find lasting peace in knowing that You are always with me and caring for me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
