Abia State University has suspended Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze of the Department of Economics with immediate effect over Facebook posts in which he claimed some professors at the institution earn less than ₦400,000 a month and that certain tricycle riders make more.
The university management described the posts as inimical to its interests and uncomplimentary to its Visitor, Governor Alex Otti. An investigative panel has been set up to examine the matter, according to a statement released on Thursday, 13 August 2026.
Chijioke Nwogu, the Deputy Registrar and Public Relations Officer, signed the official notice. “The suspension follows concerns arising from various social media posts attributed to Professor Nwaeze, which is inimical to the interests of the University and uncomplimentary to the Visitor of the University,” the statement said. The suspension remains in force pending the panel’s findings.
Nwaeze, who teaches in the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, had posted that ASUU members at ABSU were among the least paid lecturers in Nigeria and were still operating under the 2009 salary structure. He also contrasted their remuneration with higher pay received by political appointees in the state and described the union as one of the most selfless despite poor motivation.
Nwaeze previously served as Director of Information and Communication Services at the university until early 2026. No further comment from the professor or additional details from the investigative panel were available at the time of publication.
