Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has raised the alarm over a suspicious credit into one of his private bank accounts, saying unknown persons deposited funds with the narration “Contribution Electioneering Campaign” without his knowledge or consent.
In a statement on Friday signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku disclosed that the unauthorised transaction was detected during routine monitoring of his financial accounts.
“The account in question is strictly private and its details are not publicly available. Neither I nor my campaign team solicited or authorised this payment, and we have no knowledge of the person or entity behind it,” the statement read.
Atiku described the incident as “deeply troubling”, warning that it points to a possible breach of his confidential banking information. “If the private banking details of a former vice-president and leading presidential candidate can be accessed and used for unknown purposes, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe,” he said.
He added that the suspicious credit is part of a series of “concerning activities” in the build-up to the 2027 general elections and urged security agencies to investigate how his account details were obtained and used.
The former ADC presidential candidate said he has formally notified both the Nigerian public and relevant security agencies, calling for urgent action to protect citizens’ financial data and prevent similar incidents.
