Harry Kane Crowned Germany’s Player of the Year After Record 61-Goal Season

Bayern Munich striker
Harry Kane was named Germany’s Footballer of the Year on Sunday after scoring 61 goals in 51 matches last season, while club coach Vincent Kompany claimed the Coach of the Year award.

The England captain received 272 votes from members of the Association of German Sports Journalists in the annual poll organized by Kicker magazine. Teammate Michael Olise finished second with 203 votes, and VfB Stuttgart forward Deniz Undav placed third with 61.

Kane’s haul included 36 Bundesliga goals, 14 in the Champions League, 10 in the DFB-Pokal and one in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. He helped Bayern secure the league title and German Cup, scoring a hat-trick in the cup final. He also won the European Golden Shoe for the second time.

“It was the best season of my career so far,” Kane said last week upon receiving the Golden Shoe.

Kompany, who guided Bayern to the domestic double, secured 314 votes for Coach of the Year, far ahead of Freiburg’s Julian Schuster (87) and Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeneß (53).

Bayern completed a historic sweep as defender Giulia Gwinn was named Women’s Player of the Year with 106 votes. Club president Herbert Hainer called it “a Bayern double – never before have the men and women’s Player of the Year awards gone to the same club.”

CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen noted Kane is “the first Englishman ever” to win the men’s award and the first Bayern player to do so in five years. Florian Wirtz held the previous men’s title. The award has been given since 1960.

Kane, 33, also contributed to Bayern’s 2-1 Supercup victory over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. He remains a leading contender for the Ballon d’Or after adding strong World Cup form with England.
