Angela Merkel Reflects on Leadership

Angela Merkel, the former German Chancellor, has recently shared her reflections on her interactions with Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in her memoir, "Freedom: Memories 1954-2021." In excerpts from her memoir published by the German weekly Die Zeit, Merkel describes her challenges in dealing with Trump, noting his "winner-or-loser mentality" and tendency to view global affairs through the lens of a property developer. Merkel remarked, “He saw everything from the point of view of a property developer... if he didn't get it, someone else would.”

In an interview with the BBC, Merkel also defended her tenure amid criticism regarding her approach to Ukraine and NATO. She argued that had Ukraine joined NATO in 2008, it might have led to earlier and potentially more severe conflict with Russia. “It was evident to me that President Putin would not have passively observed Ukraine joining NATO,” she stated, emphasizing that Ukraine was not prepared for such a move at that time. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, labeled her NATO decision a significant "misjudgment" that emboldened Russian aggression.

On the topic of nuclear threats from Putin, Merkel expressed grave concern. She stated, “We must take every possible measure to avert the use of nuclear arms,” highlighting the alarming reality that Russia remains one of the world’s largest nuclear powers. Her reflections come at a time when Europe is reevaluating its energy strategies and diplomatic relations with Russia following Putin's invasion of Ukraine shortly after Merkel left office.

Merkel's leadership style was often characterized by calmness in contrast to Trump's fiery demeanor. During their meetings, she maintained a steady approach even when Trump criticized Germany for its defense spending and energy ties with Russia. “No one needs to talk to me about freedom; I grew up in East Germany under the Soviet Union,” Merkel calmly asserted during tense discussions.

As Europe grapples with rising tensions and economic challenges, Merkel's insights are increasingly sought after. Despite this demand for her political wisdom, she confidently stated, “No, not at all” when asked if she misses the power and politics of her past.
