Former Senator and Associates Face Court Over Alleged N400 Million Fraud

Former Senator Andy Uba, along with Crystal Uba and Benjamin Etu, was charged in a Federal High Court in Abuja for allegedly defrauding George Uboh of N400 million. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, filed the charges, accusing the trio of obtaining money under false pretenses by promising Uboh a position as Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in exchange for the funds.

In count one, it was claimed that Uba, Crystal, Etu, and Hajiya Fatima—who is currently at large—had plotted to commit the crime at some point in 2022. During the proceedings, the prosecution detailed how Uboh was convinced to part with the money, stating, “They assured me that I would be appointed to the NDDC if I complied.” The court heard that after receiving the funds, the accused failed to fulfill their promises, leading Uboh to report the matter to the police.

The defendants were not present during the initial hearing, prompting the court to issue a bench warrant for their arrest. However, they later secured an injunction against their arrest, which complicated the legal proceedings. Justice Inyang Ekwo expressed concern over the delays, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution: “Justice delayed is justice denied. We must ensure that this matter is addressed promptly.”

As the case unfolds, it has attracted significant public attention due to Uba's political background and the serious nature of the allegations. The court has scheduled further hearings for February 18, 2025, urging all parties to prepare adequately to avoid any more delays.
