Nigerian Catholic Sister Francisca Ngozi Uti Receives $1 Million Opus Prize

Sister Francisca Ngozi Uti, founder and executive director of the Centre for Women Studies and Intervention (CWSI) in Abuja, Nigeria, has been awarded the prestigious 2024 Opus Prize, which includes a $1 million grant. The announcement was made during a ceremony at Santa Clara University on November 14, 2024. This annual award honors social entrepreneurs who implement faith-driven solutions to significant social challenges.

In her acceptance speech, Sister Uti expressed her astonishment and gratitude for the recognition. “Did I ever imagine being nominated as the laureate? Honestly, no. Words seem inadequate to capture the depth of my joy. My heart overflows with gratitude,” she stated. She emphasized that the award is not just for her but for all those involved in her mission to uplift marginalized communities, particularly women and girls who have faced hardship.

The Opus Prize, totaling $1.2 million, was shared among three finalists, with Sister Uti receiving the largest portion. The other finalists included Father Zachariah Presutti of the Thrive for Life Prison Project and Bianca and Cătălin Albu from Jesuit Refugee Service-Romania, each receiving $100,000 for their impactful work.

Sister Uti founded CWSI 25 years ago to combat gender-based violence and advocate for women's rights in Nigeria. Her organization has positively impacted over one million beneficiaries through various projects aimed at addressing issues of marginalization and oppression.

Reflecting on her journey, Sister Uti credited her father for ensuring she received an education despite societal obstacles. “Thank you, Papa. Your sacrifice was not in vain,” she remarked. She also acknowledged the contributions of her team and the support from the Opus Prize jury, stating, “You believed and still believe in the work that my team and I do to alleviate the suffering and trauma of those marginalized through no fault of their own.”
