Nigeria and China Renew Currency Swap Deal
In a significant move to bolster economic ties, Nigeria and China have renewed their currency swap agreement, which is valued at 15 billion yuan (approximately $2 billion or N3.28 trillion). This renewal, announced by the People's Bank of China, is set to remain in effect for three years, with options for further extensions. The original agreement was established in 2018, and its renewal underscores the growing partnership between the two nations.
The primary aim of this currency swap deal is to facilitate smoother trade transactions between Nigeria and China by allowing direct exchanges between the Chinese yuan and the Nigerian naira. This arrangement reduces the reliance on the US dollar, which has traditionally dominated international trade. By using their respective currencies, both countries can minimize transaction costs and mitigate foreign exchange risks, ultimately enhancing trade efficiency.
The renewal of this agreement comes at a time when Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy and strengthen its trade relationships beyond traditional partners. In recent years, bilateral trade between Nigeria and China has surged, reaching approximately $22.6 billion in 2023. This growth reflects China's status as one of Nigeria's largest trading partners, with Chinese investments spanning various sectors, including infrastructure, telecommunications, and energy.
