The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has intensified efforts against illegal street trading in Ibadan, conducting a series of raids on December 15, 2024. The operation, led by Chairman Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd), targeted areas including Oritamerin, Gege, Agbeni, and Ogunpa, which have become hotspots for makeshift markets causing severe traffic congestion and environmental issues.
Adesagba emphasized the necessity of these actions, stating, "Street trading in these areas has led to indiscriminate waste disposal and clogged drainage systems, worsening flooding in parts of the city." He expressed disappointment over traders' non-compliance with government regulations, resulting in the seizure of market stalls and fines imposed on offenders. Twelve individuals operating an illegal motor park were also apprehended during the operation.
The chairman urged traders to cease street sales, highlighting that the government's initiatives aim to ensure public safety and protect property. "The OYRTMA’s enforcement operation is part of the Oyo State Government’s broader efforts to reduce accidents and improve road safety," he noted. Adesagba further remarked that these measures have significantly reduced accidents, enhancing safety for both traders and road users.
