The 2024 FIFA The Best Football Awards took place in Doha last night, honoring the outstanding achievements of players and coaches in the world of football. Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior of Real Madrid was named The Best FIFA Men's Player, while Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmatí from Barcelona took home the award for The Best FIFA Women's Player.
Vinícius Júnior's remarkable season, which included pivotal contributions to Real Madrid's UEFA Champions League victory, earned him the prestigious accolade. "This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of my teammates," he remarked during his acceptance speech. He triumphed over notable competitors such as Lionel Messi and Rodri.
Aitana Bonmatí, who has been instrumental in Barcelona's success, expressed her pride in receiving the award for the second consecutive year. "Winning this award reflects the growth of women's football and the support we receive," she stated, highlighting the increasing recognition of women's contributions to the sport.
In coaching categories, Carlo Ancelotti was honored as The Best FIFA Men's Coach for leading Real Madrid to both La Liga and Champions League titles. Ancelotti expressed gratitude to his team, saying, "This honor belongs to my entire coaching staff and players who made it possible." Emma Hayes received the award for The Best FIFA Women's Coach, having guided Chelsea to their fifth consecutive Women’s Super League title.
The ceremony also recognized exceptional goalkeeping performances. Emiliano Martínez was awarded The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper, while Alyssa Naeher claimed the title for women. Martínez emphasized teamwork in his speech: "This is not just for me; it’s for all my teammates at Aston Villa and the national team."
Additionally, Alejandro Garnacho won the FIFA Puskás Award for his stunning bicycle kick goal against Everton, while Marta received the Marta Award for her exceptional goal against Jamaica. The FIFA Fair Play Award was presented to Thiago Maia for his exemplary sportsmanship on and off the pitch.
