In a dramatic turn of events, South Korean investigators have suspended their attempt to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol following a tense six-hour standoff at his residence in Seoul on January 2, 2025. The confrontation arose as authorities sought to enforce an arrest warrant related to Yoon's controversial declaration of martial law in early December, a move that has plunged the nation into a political crisis.
The situation escalated when Yoon's security team, the Presidential Security Service (PSS), blocked investigators from entering his home. Hundreds of supporters gathered outside, creating a formidable barrier against law enforcement. As tensions mounted, police attempted to breach multiple lines of defense set up by Yoon's guards. Ultimately, the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) deemed the arrest "not feasible" due to safety concerns and the overwhelming presence of supporters rallying for Yoon.

Yoon's martial law declaration on December 3 was a desperate measure aimed at suppressing opposition in a parliament dominated by rival parties. Lawmakers quickly overturned the declaration, leading to Yoon's impeachment just days later. This crisis echoes South Korea's tumultuous political history, where power struggles often culminate in dramatic confrontations. Lawmaker Jo Seung-lae commented on the situation, saying, “Do not involve the dedicated members of the Presidential Security Service in criminal activities."
In his New Year's address, Yoon defiantly vowed to "fight until the end" against what he described as "anti-state forces," framing his actions as essential for national security amid allegations of election misconduct and pro-North Korean elements within his opposition. His legal team has dismissed the arrest warrant as "invalid" and "illegal," indicating plans to pursue further legal action against investigators.
As the political crisis unfolds, investigators have until January 6 to detain Yoon before the current warrant expires. However, they retain the option to apply for a new warrant if necessary.
